The High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR): Lubricity Test of diesel fuel is a computer controlled microprocessor- which is used for determination of the friction in terms of wear scar under both dry and lubricated condition with the help of a ball on disc assembly. This test is known for a rapid, accurate result for the identification of the performance of fuel- especially diesel and lubricants.  This lubricity testing apparatus is principally appropriate for assessing the lubricity of fluid having low lubricity such diesel fuel and gasoline fuel.

What is High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR)?

The HFRR is a reciprocating tribometer type expedient computer controlled apparatus, which is formerly designed for testing purpose of diesel fuels lubricity. It is also used for determining the lubrication performance of diesel engine oils and find out suitable lubricity improver additives which are actively utilize in boundary lubrication.

Why should we use High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR)?

The HFRR Test is a speedy and screening technique for evaluation of friction in terms of co-efficient of friction and wear profiles for fuels and lubricants under the dry and lubrication conditions. This method generates an absolute value of wear scar for diesel fuels and for lubricants it provides a plan of performance before the lubricant is further examined by means of other approaches, if necessary.

How does High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) Method Works?

A sophisticated steel ball and disc are placed in their corresponding individual holders, and organized on the HFRR assembly. They are then subjected under a particular load according to test requirement. The upper ball is moved in a reciprocating motion and steel disc kept stationary position.
Reciprocation motion happens in between the secure stationery counter surfaces materials mounted on a small lubricant bath and reciprocating ball. Frictional force in terms of co-efficient of friction is determined with the help of an electric sensor’ and the data will be obtained, compared, and analyzed and concluded through the dedicated Data Acquisition Software. The reciprocating motion is produced by a voice coil actuator. Frequency and displacement during the process are monitored using an electronic closed loop system. Displacement frequency can set and read with the help of software on a PC.
The sampling holder is fixed on a flexure which is rigid in the vertical (loading) path of direction, however in the horizontal direction the force movement offers limited resistance. The piezoelectric Transducer is used to convert mechanical quantities, for example force directly to an electric charge and proportional to the force performing on the quartz crystal in the sensor is specified in PC.
An accelerometer is fixed on the output channel of an electro dynamic shaker which dealings with measurement of  the displacement accelerometer utilizes the spring mass system for generating a force proportional to amplitude of the input accelerometer to the base of system.
The HFRR is operated at different temperatures and encoded & design accordingly to meet the specific application of the fuel/oil/lubricant being tested.

What standard test procedure are recognized?

Various standard test procedure have been established, such as ASTM, ISO, IP etc
1.       D7688,
2.       ISO 12156,
3.       ASTM D6079,
4.       JPI-5S-50,
5.       CEC F-06-A,
6.       EN 590,
7.       IP 450

3D Demonstration of Wear Scar:

A high resolution microscope is used for the measurement diameter of the wear scar on the ball. The evacuated volume can also be resolute with the help of 3D image optical microscope.

Calibration of HFRR:

The calibration of HFRR is easy and an entirely automatic test control sequence, which save the operator’s time. Test specimens used are one usable ball and firm disc which fit in to all international diesel fuel test standards. Other than of diesel fuel analysis, recent HFRR applications also include gasoline/petrol analysis, measuring grease/lubricants behavior under scope of boundary conditions, the determination of lubricants of marine engine and investigations into, both dry condition and in the presence of lubricants there.
